Young Thug came to recognition after joining 1017 Records, where he released several mixtapes, including his critically lauded debut 1017 Thug. His contributions to the label further grew his public image, and allowed Young Thug to release his debut commercial single “Stoner”, which peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified gold. This success, coupled with label issues, enabled Young Thug to secure a recording contract with 300 Entertainment in 2014.
Young Thug released his debut studio mixtape, Barter 6, in April 2015, which peaked at number twenty-two on the Billboard 200. It contained the single “Check”, which was soon certified gold, but the album encountered mixed critical success; he would hit similar heights with his follow up, I’m Up (2016). He then released Slime Season 3 soon after, which enjoyed generally positive critical reception, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. Soon after, Young Thug released the mixtape Jeffery (2016). It contained the double-platinum single “Pick Up the Phone”, and enjoyed resounding critical success, often cited as one of the albums of the year.
